The branch of Karstadt in Hamburg Mönckebergstraße is next to the also belonging to the Karstadt group Alsterhaus on Jungfernstieg and lying on top of the Mönckebergstraße branch of Galeria Kaufhof one of the three major department stores in the center of Hamburg . With a sales area of around 32,000 m², it is the largest of the three houses mentioned. The branch is divided into the larger main building on Mönckebergstrasse and the smaller Thaliahaus on Kleine Rosenstrasse, which was opened in 1982. The buildings are connected to one another by a three-storey pedestrian bridge.

history

The house was opened in 1912 as the company's first branch in a large city. At that time it only extended along Mönckebergstraße and with a side wing along the then horse market (today: Gerhart-Hauptmann-Platz). At the rear of Kleine Rosenstrasse there was an open courtyard for logistics until the 1970s. During the " Operation Gomorrah ", the heavy air raids on Hamburg during World War II , the building burned down in July 1943. After reconstruction, it was reopened on November 24, 1948. A major renovation took place around 1981/82 when the "Thaliahaus" was opened. Also in 1982, today's extensive escalator construction, which is located next to the elevators, was put into operation. The inner courtyard was sacrificed to this building. At the same time, the two old escalator systems standing free in the sales rooms were dismantled. On this occasion, the four elevators were converted to self-propelled operation. Until then, the elevators were operated by specially employed staff. It was at this time that the decision was made to outsource the toys and sporting goods to the new branch at the main train station. That branch (called "Karstadt Spiel + Sport" at the time) housed a Kepa department store branch up until then .

You could park on the roof of the main building until the 1980s. To this end, the building still has two car elevators that can be reached via Kleine Rosenstrasse. Today, however, you can only use the parking garage in the "Thaliahaus", which was also put into operation in 1982. For a few years, the regulation after business hours that you could walk a short way through the (closed) sales rooms of the Thaliahaus to the elevator to get to the parking garage, which was open longer, was curious.

The building was extensively redesigned by the end of 2008 and upgraded to one of the so-called “cosmopolitan houses”. Since then, the focus of the range has been on clothing and fashion. During this time, the second entrance was also built at the corner of Mönckebergstrasse / Kleine Rosenstrasse, which mainly leads to the Europa Passage . At the same time, the small triangular square (with a subway entrance) was provided with a glass roof that is level with the building roof zone.

The house can be easily reached via public transport , the closest rapid transit station is the Rathaus (City Hall) on subway line 3 , which is directly opposite the south entrance of the main building.
