Last Christmas is a British - American feature film made in 2019 by Paul Feig with Emilia Clarke , Henry Golding , Michelle Yeoh and Emma Thompson . The screenplay by Emma Thompson and Bryony Kimmings is based on a story by Emma Thompson and Greg Wise .

In the USA, the film was released on November 8, 2019, and the German and Austrian release date was November 14, 2019. On October 22, 2019, a preview took place at the UCI Luxe on Mercedes-Platz in Berlin in the presence of Emilia Clarke .

action

The film takes place in the run-up to Christmas in London , where Kate, dressed as a Christmas elf , works in a Christmas specialty shop that is open 365 days a year. A year earlier she was seriously ill and only survived because of a heart transplant, which only becomes clear later in the film. Kate feels that her new heart is less than happiness, but rather that she has lost something special. So she neglects her job and concentrates on a seemingly hopeless career as a stage dancer and singer. She fell out with her mother and older sister. She only eats fast food and finds no meaning in her life.

Because of the chaos and wrong decisions she made herself, she is constantly annoyed, also by the tinkling of the bell shoes that she has to wear at work. To the displeasure of her boss, her attitude does not spread a Christmas spirit. Her boss lets her get away with a lot, apparently out of consideration for her long illness.

One day the charming and attractive Tom comes into her life. He recognizes what is hidden behind Kate's grouchy facade and manages to break the barriers that Kate has built around herself and her heart. He succeeds in giving Kate joy in life and self-confidence again. However, he seems to have a secret.

As the city turns into a pre-Christmas sea of lights and prepares for the best time of the year, Kate learns that sometimes she just has to follow her heart and let things happen. In flashbacks it becomes clear that it wasn't really Tom who motivates her to find herself and to help others, because Tom is dead. Apparently the young woman finds her way back to life on her own, with the help of the heart that she had for a year previously received from Tom as part of an organ donation . The title chorus “I gave you my heart” gets a different, literal meaning.

Production and Background

Filming took place in London from November 26, 2018 to February 2019 . The film was shot at West London Film Studios in Hayes, Hillingdon and Marylebone , among others .

The film was produced by David Livingstone for Calamity Films , Emma Thompson and Paul Feig and Jessie Henderson for Feigco Entertainment . The production cost was around $ 30 million. Renee Ehrlich Kalfus was responsible for the costume design and Gary Freeman for the production design.

After Just a Little Favor (2018), this was another collaboration between actor Henry Golding and director Paul Feig , who had already directed a Christmas film with Oh je, du Fröhliche (2006) . Golding and Michelle Yeoh starred in Crazy Rich (2018).

The soundtrack album includes Last Christmas , Everything She Wants , Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go, three tracks from the Wham! , plus twelve numbers from George Michael's solo career . Andrew Ridgely , the other half of Wham! , has a cameo as a spectator in the audience at the homeless shelter towards the end of the film .

The foundation stone for the film was laid when film producer David Livingstone spoke to Emma Thompson about his preference for the Wham song Last Christmas . As a result, the two came up with the idea of producing a film that should be inspired by the song. In the spring of 2013 Emma Thompson visited George Michael in his London home, where he gave her his approval for the project. George Michael wanted to make sure there was an element of the film about the homeless because the subject mattered to him. Henry Golding's character therefore works in the film as a volunteer in a contact point for the homeless.

Reviews

The film received mixed reviews. Rotten Tomatoes received 89 positive and 103 negative reviews. Metacritic counted 12 positive, 22 mixed and 6 negative publications. On the Internet Movie Database page, the weighted average score of 6.5 out of 10 was determined from 22,613 users.

Sabrina Lohninger found in TV-Media that the film would weaken heavily in the first half, pick up speed in the second half and rob emotional viewers a tear or two. When Emilia Clarke trills Last Christmas at the end , the rather meager first 60 minutes are forgotten and forgiven.

Sidney Schering described the film on Oddsmeter.de as "pleasant, sweet, beautiful Christmas fun". Feig used Clarke's very naturally bustling comedic talent and let him run wild and rely on Henry Golding's warm, friendly charisma and his playful, polite smile. Much of the film relies on this charm offensive. The dialogue jokes are not as densely sown as you might imagine with this humorous cast, and it takes time until a clear thread emerges. The film deliberately withholds prior knowledge about central characters in order to use it later in the film to change the perspective of the characters. The fact that this comes very late and is underlined dramatically makes this either a chunky twist or a somewhat kitschy, but Christmassy-hearty surprise, which could have been packaged a little more gallantly.

Hannah Pilarczyk described the film on Spiegel Online as "purr about love in Christmas London". That is neither romantic nor original, but it is good as a zeitgeist diagnosis. The film tries to connect seamlessly to romantic comedies like Four Weddings and a Funeral , Bridget Jones , Love Actually or Notting Hill . What he does differently from her is by far the most interesting thing about him. Zeitgeist signifiers would move into the spotlight : “Multicultural optimism has given way to Brexit hard-heartedness , and tourists are now being insulted in the red double-decker buses . Nobody has time for dinner parties. When Kate finally comes to rest, it's a street food market that she goes to with her mother. ”As a“ cash fall of the decade longs, ”the film works pretty well.

Gross profit

The budget of around 25 million US dollars is offset by worldwide revenues of 67.86 million US dollars so far, of which the film alone has grossed 31.66 million in North America.
