action

Die-hard cop John Kimble arrests drug dealer Cullen Crisp for the murder of an informant. The crime was observed by a young, drug addict woman who, as a witness, enabled Crisp to be arrested. In order to convict him, the police need the help of Crisp's ex-wife Rachel, who, however, is with her son Cullen jr. and went underground for a few million dollars from Crisp's drug business. The informant who was murdered by Crisp, however, had found her whereabouts: a kindergarten in Astoria , Oregon.

Kimble and his colleague Phoebe O'Hara are sent out to find the two and persuade them to work together, which is made difficult by the fact that no current photos exist of either of them. In order to find the two, O'Hara is supposed to take a job as a kindergarten teacher and identify Cullen Jr., but on the way there she falls ill unexpectedly, and so Kimble spontaneously has to take over the part. The children annoy him with their raging and their playful nature, but with the help of his police officer training he manages to teach the children discipline. At the same time, however, he is beginning to enjoy the job and is wholeheartedly committed to his students.

Kimble falls in love with a young teacher named Joyce, whose son Dominic is in his class. Over time, however, it turns out that she is Crisp's ex-wife and Dominic is actually his son. Likewise, Crisp only made up the story with the stolen drug money to get his son, whom his ex-wife wants to protect.

In the meantime, Crisp is released again through the initiative of his bossy mother: she made sure that the witness was sold pure heroin, so that the woman died of an overdose. This means that there is no longer any witness to the crime and Crisp will be released again. Immediately afterwards he shows up in Astoria and wants to take his son. To separate Dominic from Kimble, he sets the kindergarten on fire and kidnaps his son. When Kimble puts him in the school toilet, Crisp injures Kimble but is shot by him. Crisp's mother shows up and threatens Kimble to find out where her grandson is, but O'Hara overpowers her.

O'Hara, who is about to marry a clumsy cook, visits Kimble at the hospital and asks him where to send the wedding invitation. Kimble then decides to stay as a teacher in kindergarten and start a new life with Joyce and Dominic.

The German dubbing makes a gross blunder: On July 4th ( American Independence Day ) the children recite the famous Gettysburg Address of Abraham Lincoln and begin with the words "407 years ago ...". Lincoln's “Four score and seven years ago” is called “87 years ago” (analogous to the French “quatre-vingt”, the English “score” here means “20”).

Reviews

The film received mixed reviews. The film review portal Rotten Tomatoes gives the film 50% positive reviews and it has a Metascore of 61 out of 100 at Metacritic .

“Brutal action film that blatantly propagates a paramilitary upbringing, glorifies violence as the solvent of conflicts and only in a few moments creates an ironic, but not recognizable for a young audience, distance to its 'end justifies the means' mentality. "

“After Gemini , Kindergarten Cop was the second Reitman film in which megastar Schwarzenegger didn't impress with his bulging muscles, but aimed at the laughing muscles of the audience. Quite successful: his new image earned him a fee of 15 million dollars and also appealed to viewers who have so far probably not paid an entrance fee for his tough action flicks. Nevertheless, despite a few good ironic text sequences and the cute child actors, the film remains conventional in its realization and clichéd in the story. "
