University sports

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

University sports are sporting activities that are offered by universities for their students and employees and are usually organized in the university's own sports center . The aim is to maintain the health of the university members and to organize their leisure time, which means that it is mainly in the field of popular sports . At some universities in Germany, university sports are also available to the general public. At the same time, there are regular competitions with the university championships (for example the ADH ) that also cover the field of competitive sports. Internationally, university sports are organized by the FISU , which regularly hosts the Universiade .

In university rankings , university sport is often a criterion for evaluating the infrastructure .

University sports must be distinguished from sports science , which is dedicated to academic research and teaching in the field of sports.

insurance

In the context of sporting activities at universities, participation in general university sport is protected as company sport, because such activity is covered by social insurance if it serves to compensate for work and is not only in the personal interest. In university sports, this only includes events that are listed in the course catalog. Recently, however, the Detmold Social Court (Az .: S 14 U 152/08) decided that an annual traditional football tournament, which is carried out and organized at a university of applied sciences, is not an event within the framework of general university sports. In the view of the court, isolated competitions against teams from other company sports associations essentially serve the participants' own interests. If one of the participants were injured, the accident insurance could therefore not be used for services - such as the granting of injury benefits.

International

In sport in the United States , college sports play an important role in attracting young talent in top-class sport. Historically, it goes back to student engagement there to compete with other schools in terms of sport. Almost every university has its own sports facilities and teams. Most of them are organized in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) or the National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association (NJCAA) and regularly compete against each other. In addition, the universities have stadiums that are sometimes larger than the size of European football arenas. The path to professional sport mainly leads through the so-called varsity teams of university sports . In addition, there are also popular sports leagues and teams in North American universities, which are referred to as "Recreational" (recreation) and, similar to Germany, mostly keep the competition within the university walls ( intramural ).
