Kohlhaas or the proportionality of the means is the diploma film by director Aron Lehmann from 2012. It was shot in Nördlinger Ries , where Lehmann grew up, for example in Holzkirchen , Maihingen , Ederheim and at Niederhaus Castle .

After a day of shooting, a film team that Heinrich von Kleist's novella Michael Kohlhaas would like to film in a Bavarian village is informed that the financial support has been canceled. The director then decides to shoot the film with existing objects (cows instead of horses, trees instead of enemy soldiers ...) anyway.

“Kohlhaas is characterized by irritating changes of mood throughout. On the one hand, Aron Lehmann tries to seriously address the sensitivities of his main character of the same name, but on the other hand is not too good for any comic comedy. Little by little, the film changes into a strange structure that moves erratically through levels of reality. If the viewer feels embarrassed shortly before by some of the pseudo-documentary recordings, he is suddenly faced with a surreal dreaminess and strange poetics. With these mutually undermining contrasts, the film manages, albeit a little exaggerated, to clarify the gap between the dream of the great epic and the bitter situation. "
Wolfgang Hamdorf praised the film as an "entertaining tragic comedy".
