Malte Wirtz

Malte Wirtz (born October 5, 1979 in Marburg / Lahn ) is a German director and author .

Life

According to an interview with Markus Kavka , Wirtz's passion for filmmaking began in his childhood when he was given the birthday present to make a short film. He later studied film and theater directing at the Athanor Academy from 2001 to 2005 with David Esrig . His graduation film Hinter dem Glück was funded by the FilmFernsehFonds Bayern and was shown at various festivals (Festival of Festivals St. Petersburg, Alter-Native-Festival Tirgu Mures etc.).

He then worked as a freelance theater director , film director and cutter in Cologne . He staged at the Junge Theater Leverkusen, Kammerspielchen Wuppertal and the stage of cultures . The interactive piece myWorld premiered at the artheater Cologne. It was the first production in German-speaking countries that used digital technology to enable audience interaction. A guest performance at Ballhaus Ost followed later .

With Pablo Ben-Yakov and Michael Schluchter he founded the Paul Hinze collective in 2009, which produced several short films (including Where Love Falls , The Laughing of Others and The Jackpot ).

On the occasion of his feature film debut Voll Paula! At the end of 2013 he founded the film production company Unfiltered Artists in Cologne, with which he moved to Berlin in 2014. Voll started Paula in autumn 2015 ! in theaters.

His second film Hard & Ugly is based on the play of the same name, which was staged in February 2015 in Hebbel am Ufer , as part of the 100 Grad Festival . The world premiere took place in the Deutsches Museum as part of the Light Film Festival . The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung wrote: “These are not primarily pleasing, but very different films: [...] 'Hard & Ugly', a black and white story of happiness that slips between the fingers, by the Marburg director Malte Wirtz. " Thekla Jahn says that he recognizes the director again in the protagonist:" Malte Wirtz, are you actually this idealist who has fallen out of time and who falls by the wayside in the search for love? "

He shot the film Just a Day in Berlin in a single day. Programmkino.de wrote: "You notice this experimental, improvised character in the film, which often seems a bit bumpy and inexperienced, but is also original and full of joy in playing because of this."

Wirtz has lived in Berlin since 2014 . He has children.
