history

The academy was founded in 1995 by David Esrig in Burghausen. It is the result of Esrig's free theater work in Munich, where he and the Athanor eV association offered postgraduate studies for professional actors. The academy was approved by the state from 1995 and has been state-recognized since 1999. This year the first generation completed their studies at the academy. In 2014 the academy moved to Passau. From August 1, 2019, Sebastian Goller will be the new head of the academy.

The academy's namesake is athanor , an oven that was used by alchemists in the Middle Ages. The Athanor Academy is a member of the MedienCampus Bayern , the umbrella organization for media education and training in Bavaria, and of the International Theater Institute ITI .
