Reviews
Overall, the film received mixed feedback from the critics.
Benjamin Lee of the Guardian writes that the plot may be overly confused, but the film is not lacking in subtle ideas. The extraterrestrials themselves are also uniquely designed, frightening and enchanting at the same time, and therefore as strange as the film in which they play the main role.
Today's Leonard Dworschak describes Captive State as a sophisticated thriller that plays skillfully with sci-fi elements. The camera remains the most important event, without providing the viewer with status updates from the side scenes: "This narrative form makes the film extremely exciting and unpredictable, but requires that the audience thinks instead of just being showered." if the aliens are placeholders, they can be read as a political and social elite that cruelly, unscrupulously and inapproachably divides the proletariat in order to exploit it, according to Dworschak. Alternatively, Captive State can also be interpreted as a commentary on modern imperialism, which makes the film interesting not only as a thriller and science fiction film, but also as a parable.
