action
Former US Army Ranger Mike Banning is the Secret Service agent responsible for protecting US President Benjamin Asher, First Lady Margaret Asher and their son Connor. The presidential family's car crashed on a drive from Camp David . Banning is able to save the President from the vehicle before it falls off a bridge with Margaret and pulls her to her death.
Eighteen months after this incident, Mike, who was transferred to the Treasury Department, is working at his desk, within sight of the White House , where President Asher is meeting with the South Korean Prime Minister that day. This is abruptly interrupted when a Lockheed AC-130 of the United States Air Force enters the blocked airspace over Washington without authorization. The President and all ministers present are then taken to the Presidential Emergency Operations Center under the east wing of the White House. When two F-22 interceptors attempt to identify the intruding aircraft, they are riddled with machine guns and crash over the city. The plane continues to cruise over the city, firing indiscriminately at passers-by as well as targeting the White House. Only air-to-air missiles from an interceptor called for reinforcement damage the aircraft at the rear, which then collides with a wing with the Washington Monument and finally hits the south lawn of the White House .
In the ensuing mess, a suicide bomber blows a hole in the White House fence, through which a group of apparently well-organized North Korean terrorists penetrate and, after a firefight with the security team, take control of the White House. President Asher and other high-ranking figures are held captive in the White House bunker by Kang, the terrorist leader, with the help of former Secret Service agent and traitor Dave Forbes; the South Korean Prime Minister is killed. The Secret Service agent Roma still manages to convey the code phrase "Olympus has fallen" to his superior Lynne Jacobs before he is the last of the security team to be killed. "Olympus" is the Secret Service code for the White House.
With his attack, Kang wants to force the withdrawal of all US troops from the Korean peninsula . In this case, a power vacuum would arise , which would presumably lead to a North Korean invasion of South Korea and a conflict between the Asian powers. He also wants to get revenge for his parents 'deaths by blowing up all of the United States' nuclear weapons in their missile silos. To do this, he needs the access codes, which are in the possession of three members of the government: President Asher, Secretary of Defense McMillan and Admiral Hoenig. Asher asks his two colleagues to reveal their code so that their lives will be spared, but announces not to reveal his own.
Mike Banning manages to get into the White House unscathed during the attack by Kang's troops. He begins disabling internal surveillance systems and taking out individual terrorists while using the President's cellphone to keep in touch with the Speaker of the House of Representatives , Allan Trumbull, who is acting as President-in-Office during the crisis. Banning manages to smuggle the presidential son Connor, whom Kang wanted to use as leverage against President Asher, to the waiting security forces. Shortly afterwards, he also turns off Dave Forbes. Meanwhile, Trumbull orders a SEAL team to attack from the air. However, Kang does have a US air defense system called Hydra . Banning discovers Hydra just before the attack, but cannot convince his superiors to abandon the mission. The Seals helicopters are shot down despite Mike Banning's intervention, and Kang kills Vice President Charlie Rodriguez in retaliation for the unsuccessful rescue attempt .
Banning is subsequently able to block Kang's communications systems, prompting him to want to shoot Defense Secretary McMillan in front of the public in front of the front door of the White House. But Banning succeeds in saving McMillan and eliminating several of Kang's men. Since Kang has only a few men left, he fakes his death and that of the president, but sacrifices most of his remaining men and the other hostages. With the help of a hacker from his team, Kang is finally able to crack President Asher's code and activate Cerberus , the access program to the US nuclear weapons. However, Banning saw through the faked death of Kang. He surprises this and the remaining terrorists and can kill them in combat, where President Asher is shot by Kang. With the help of Trumbull, Banning can deactivate Cerberus at the last moment and leave the White House with Asher. After these events, Mike is returned to his old post as bodyguard with the President.

"A typical Hollywood action rag in which the White House is crushed by an attack, the US flag is torn up and pushed aside by villains, and clichés pop up wherever you look."
“The political thriller 'Olympus Has Fallen' is a straightforward, tightly organized adventure that captivates from start to finish. Visually excellent, the story also offers a few surprising twists, which add to the tension. "
"Keeps the tension right and produces the kind of nationalist outrage that annoys die-hard Americans."
“Director Antoine Fuqua has at least quoted the ambivalences in many of his films. Big city thrillers like Training Day or Law of the Street - Brooklyn's Finest hid their pathos of loyalty and righteousness behind suggested milieu studies and somewhat complex characters. Here now Fuqua can let off steam without this annoying clutter, play cheerfully with hero and enemy clichés - and live out his destructiveness with significantly increased commitment. "
“Especially in times when Hollywood is almost always looking for its salvation in over-produced fantasy spectacles, one can definitely enjoy such B-movie reductions. Especially when, as in 'Olympus Has Fallen', they are exercised with a certain feeling for the textures and the dramaturgic rhythm of the movement image. After a somewhat chaotic initial phase, the film contracts spatially and dramatically, concentrating entirely on Gerald Butler's one-man campaign in the reddish-bluish illuminated interior of the half-shattered seat of government, whose culturally bourgeois interior gives way to an amalgam of blood, sweat and steel . Director Antoine Fuqua, most recently with the also extremely worth seeing drama 'Brooklyn's Finest' with quite different ambitions, is based on the uncomplicated, testosterone-fueled action cinema of the eighties. "
“Solidly staged action film with a completely absurd plot that focuses entirely on the thoroughly routine and straightforward story. He becomes questionable through numerous brutal and violent scenes that rely on torture and justify it. "
