London Has Fallen is an American - British action film by director Babak Najafi , which was released in US cinemas on March 4, 2016 and in German cinemas on March 10, 2016. The film is a sequel to Olympus Has Fallen (2013).

The third installment in the series was released in the United States in August 2019 under the title Angel Has Fallen .

action

After the sudden death of British Prime Minister James Wilson, all leading heads of state in the western world are invited to his funeral in London. This includes the President of the United States, Benjamin Asher, who is accompanied by Secret Service agents Mike Banning and Lynn Jacobs.
During the journey to the scheduled funeral service, a very large group of separately attacking terrorists killed the Prime Minister of Canada, the German Chancellor, the Prime Minister of Japan, the Italian Prime Minister and the French President within a short time at various points in the British capital.
The terrorists want to avenge a deadly drone attack on a Pakistani wedding ceremony authorized by the G8 two years earlier by throwing the western world into chaos and promising further attacks in other metropolises. The attack on Asher and attempts to take him as a prisoner can initially be foiled by Banning and his staff. Most terrorists appear disguised as police officers or royal court guards , so that the situation is completely confusing and friend and foe can hardly be distinguished.

To worsen the situation, the terrorists also cause a city-wide power outage. After the attack on them, President Asher and Banning embarked on an escape from the terrorists, which led them through larger parts of the British capital by vehicles, helicopters and on foot. With the help of MI6 agent Jacquelin Marshall, they try to reach the American embassy, but they fail.

The mastermind behind the attack, an internationally sought-after Pakistani arms dealer, finally arrests Asher and announces his execution, which he plans to broadcast live over the Internet. At the last moment, Banning can step in and work with the SAS to save the president. As it turned out later, the terrorists had a mole in the British secret service who made the infiltration of the security organs possible in the massive form that had happened. The terrorists were also responsible for the death of the British Prime Minister, which turns out to be murder. Years of preparation preceded the attack, and the funeral service was the trap set up for it.

production

Pre-production

Originally, production was supposed to start in London in May 2014. As with the film Olympus Has Fallen, Creighton Rothenberger and Katrin Benedikt were hired as screenwriters and supported by Chad St. John and Christian Gudegast . Antoine Fuqua was unable to return to directing because of his work on The Equalizer . In May 2014 it was announced that Focus Features had acquired the distribution rights to the sequel and that it was actually planning to release the film on October 2, 2015. After Fredrik Bond was still under discussion as the new director in August 2014 , but left the project only six weeks before the planned start of filming, Babak Najafi was hired to direct on September 28, 2014 .

publication

On May 20, 2015, Focus Features reactivated its Gramercy Pictures brand for action, horror and science fiction films and released London Has Fallen under their name. The release was originally planned for October 2, 2015. On June 12, 2015, however, it was announced that the film would be postponed to January 22, 2016 in order not to compete with Ridley Scott's film The Martian , which swapped its original starting date on November 25, 2015 with Victor Frankenstein two days earlier would have. The first trailer for the film was released on July 1, 2015. The timing of the release has been described as "tactless" by the Tavistock Square Memorial Trust, as it coincided with the week of the 10th anniversary of the London bombings , which killed 52 people, and the Sousse attacks which 30 British were killed. On September 6, 2015, the release date was postponed to March 4, 2016 as the studio needed more time to complete the visual effects . The official US trailer was released on November 5, 2015. A new movie poster was also released on January 21, 2016.

reception

Reviews

Even before it officially opened in theaters, the film had received mostly negative reviews.

Even after the US premiere, the negatives predominated. So designated z. B. Peter Travers from Rolling Stone London Has Fallen as a "poisonous stew", which only confirms the audience in their xenophobic attitude, and therefore called for a boycott of the film. Mark Kermode called the film on the BBC "terrible and utterly boring" ("terrible and thoroughly boring"). Positive reviews remained exceptions.

Gross profit

The film grossed $ 21.6 million in North American cinemas on its opening weekend and landed at number 2 on the box-office charts. The worldwide revenue of the film is around 196 million US dollars, which is 31 million US dollars more than the first part, which had raised 165 million US dollars. The film's production budget was $ 60 million, which was $ 10 million cheaper than the first.

In Germany, the film had 389,627 cinema-goers (as of August 7, 2016).
