action

Billy "The Great" Hope is the reigning light heavyweight champion and has it all: fame, money and a wonderful family. He spent most of his difficult youth in children's homes, a fate that he shares with his wife Maureen. After Hope has successfully defended the world title for the fourth time, his wife, who watches over the newfound luxury and well-being of the family, begins to worry about the health of her husband, who has to take more and more hard blows. Against the wishes of his manager Jordan Mains, she ordered him a year off from fighting. But then his wife Maureen dies in a tragic incident when he fights with the boxer Miguel "Magic" Escobar, whereupon Hope loses the ground under her feet. In addition, his egocentric manager Jordan, who is actually a close friend, drops him because he missed a $ 30 million offer during Billy's break. Hope starts drinking, becomes violent, and loses his fortune. Then the youth welfare office takes his daughter Leila away from him and puts her in a home for the time being.

Once at the bottom, Hope turns to the trainer Tick Wills, who should help him to continue his boxing career. The ex-professional trainer has an alcohol problem himself, but he supports him in his struggle back to a regular life. While Hope is training for a professional comeback in the ring, he also fights for custody of his daughter, who distances herself more and more from her father during his visits to the home. In order to meet the strict requirements of the court, Hope looks for an apartment and provides evidence that he has a regular job. Through the hard training, the help from Tick and the strong will to win his daughter back, Hope manages to get his life under control again. He also gets the chance to box in a show fight for a charitable cause that he can also decide for himself. His former manager Jordan Mains attended this fight and then made him an offer to fight for the title against Miguel Escobar. Hope asks Tick for help because only with him can he win the fight. Tick reluctantly agrees and prepares Hope for the fight with hard training. Although Hope is a normal boom (left display) as a boxer , Wills shows him how to switch to right display (Southpaw) in order to give him a tactical advantage in the ring with a final blow against his opponent. After a while, Hope succeeds in regaining custody of Leila. Leila and Hope now live together in his small, modest apartment and are slowly getting closer.

After weeks of hard training there is now a fight between Escobar and Hope. At first it seems as if Hope is inferior to the reigning champion Escobar, who can decide the first rounds for himself. Hope can calm down and turn the tide. In the last minute, he remembers his trainer's words to switch to the "Southpaw" position and send the champion to the floor with a final left uppercut. Miguel Escobar manages to get up before the referee can count him and is saved by the final gong. Through the final judge's decision "Split Decision", after which one judge decides for Escobar and the other two see Hope in front, Hope can win the fight and gets his title back. He is the new reigning world light heavyweight champion. In the locker room Hope hands over the master belt to Trainer Tick and hugs his daughter, who was able to watch the fight in the locker room in front of the screen.

background

financing

According to Bloomberg, Southpaw is the first US film to have its production costs (30 million US dollars) financed entirely by a Chinese donor (Wanda Pictures). Film market experts recognize a new trend in this, that Hollywood producers increasingly want to make films attractive for the Chinese film market, since the US market is no longer expandable and the Chinese cinema market will soon outstrip the US market. Southpaw is also a prime example of the attempt to overturn film policy regulations in China for quoting foreign films (34 per year per theater) because funding by Chinese companies exempts a film from these legal requirements.

occupation

On March 6, 2014, Antoine Fuqua confirmed that Jake Gyllenhaal will take on the lead role of Billy Hope, replacing Eminem originally intended for the role . Gyllenhaal prepared for the role of boxer with intense training that included 2,000 sit-ups and a 13-kilometer run every day. In addition, regular boxing training was on the training plan. Gyllenhaal later said that Southpaw would be an extremely memorable film for him because of the pain he went through. On August 7, 2014, the use of Beau Knapp as Hope's best friend Jon Jon became known. A day later, Naomie Harris was confirmed in the role of Angela Rivera.

Filming

Filming began on June 16, 2014 and took place in Pittsburgh , Indiana, Pennsylvania and New York .

reception

Reviews

The film won over 60 percent of Rotten Tomatoes ' critics .

"At leinwandreporter.com Southpaw does not get off that well:" So the technically very well made film simply lacks exciting ideas to turn 'Southpaw' into the very possible, strong experience . "

However, Gyllenhaal has received praise from many for the authentic embodiment of the boxer Billy Hope, who has been looking for his next physical challenge with Southpaw. Paul Bradshaw of gamesradar.com says : "Jake Gyllenhaal gives everything he can and delivers a stunning performance."

music

Film music

The composer of the film music, James Horner , died in June 2015, before Southpaw opened in theaters . The score was next to the music for the remake The Magnificent Seven (The Magnificent Seven) and 69 Days of Hope (The 33) one of his last works. According to director Antoine Fuqua, Horner worked on the music for free because he was a big fan of the film and he was particularly impressed by the father-daughter story in the film. Horner also contributed two pieces to the soundtrack album of the same name.

Soundtrack

The Southpaw soundtrack with brute music in the ring scenes was produced by the rapper Eminem and released on July 24, 2015, just under a month before the cinema release. In the US soundtrack charts, this reached number 5. The song Phenomenal was one of 74 songs that were shortlisted for nominations in the Best Movie Song category at the 2016 Academy Awards .
