action

On August 5, 2010, 33 miners entered the Mina San José to do their dangerous work. Suddenly a mountain blow traps them underground. Trapped in a confined space with little food, a struggle for survival begins for the men. For days, their relatives, fueled by the media coverage that triggered the disaster, try to ensure that the search for the men continues. Politics is also interested in finding men alive. The young minister Laurence Golborne takes over the management of the crisis team.

69 days of fear lie in front of both the men in the pit and the relatives in the Atacama desert .

Background information

Produced inexpensively with a budget of 25 million US dollars, the filming took place in the winter of 2013/2014 partly on original locations in Chile but also in Colombia . The mine that can be seen in the film is located in the Colombian province of Cundinamarca .

Although the film is very accurate in many representations, some events that actually applied to several of the 33 miners have been merged into a few main characters. In the film, for example, it is described that Mario Sepúlveda has a daughter who plays football, or that Jessica Vega was pregnant at the time of the disaster. Neither is true. The film also shows that Álex Vega was the first miner to see the light of day again, in truth Vega was number 10.

Jennifer Lopez was originally intended for the role of María Segovia , but the team had to cancel her due to deadline reasons shortly before filming began, and Juliette Binoche was signed.

69 Days of Hope is the last film for which James Horner composed the music. He died in 2015. The screenplay is based on extensive research of journalist Hector Tobar, who in his book Deep Down Dark: The Untold Stories of 33 Men Buried in a Chilean mine and the Miracle That Set Them Free publications, as well as the well German autobiography of the miner José Henriquez, 70 days underground .
