Irene Bedard
Irene Bedard (born July 22, 1967 in Anchorage , Alaska ) is an American actress and voice actress who became famous for portraying Native American characters.
Life
Private life
Irene Bedard's mother is of Inupiat Eskimo descent, her father is of French-Canadian and Cree- Indian descent. In 1993 she married the singer Denny Wilson, with whom she also has a son, Quinn Wilson. In 2010 she separated from her husband, whom she accused of abuse for years. There followed a dispute over her son's guardianship. After staying in the "lower 48" of the USA, she now lives in Alaska again.
Career
She had her first significant role in 1994 in the television film Lakota Woman: Siege at Wounded Knee as Lakota Indian Mary Crow Dog , for which she was awarded the Golden Globe . For the Walt- Disney -Zeichentrickfilme Pocahontas and Pocahontas 2 - Journey to a new world she lent her voice the heroine. In 1996, she played a woman of the Black Buffalos in the historical western Crazy Horse . In 1997 she played the role of Suzy Song in the film Smoke Signals , shot entirely by Native / First Americans . In 2004 she received one of the American Indian LA Film and TV Awards for Best Actress for her role in the film Greasewood Flat . In 2005, she played Pocahonta's mother Nonoma in the feature film The New World . She had another appearance in the 2011 film The Tree of Life by Terrence Malick, which was awarded the Golden Palm .
In 2018 she was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.
