Longmire is an American crime and neo-western series based on the crime series Walt Longmire by Craig Johnson . It's about Walt Longmire, a Wyoming sheriff who tries to get back on his feet through his work after the death of his wife. It was first broadcast in the United States on June 3, 2012 on the cable channel A&E and in Germany on January 10, 2014 on RTL Nitro . The series ended in the US on November 17, 2017 with the sixth season being made available by Netflix .

action

Walt Longmire ( Robert Taylor ) is the sheriff in fictional Absaroka County, Wyoming . He's very old-fashioned and doesn't have a cell phone. He lives rather withdrawn and, at the beginning of the series, has been a widower for a year, which he has still not processed. In his private life he is in regular contact with his daughter Cady and Cheyenne Henry, who owns a bar. He has been friends with him for many years.

Professionally he has to struggle with the fact that the young Deputy Branch Connally wants to replace him as sheriff. His young colleague Victoria, who has to find her way around the small town after five years in Philadelphia, where she worked on the homicide squad, and the clumsy Ferg, who owes his job to his father, complete the team of investigators.

background

Craig Johnson, author of the books

Longmire is based on the crime series Walt Longmire by Craig Johnson . The television series was developed by Hunt Baldwin and John Coveny, two co-authors of the crime series The Closer . In December 2010, a pilot episode was ordered, after which the casting began. In February 2011, Australian actor Robert Taylor was hired to play the main character. In August 2011, the responsible broadcaster A&E ordered a full first season. This was filmed in New Mexico in early 2012 .

On the one hand, the series is a classic crime series with elements of drama, in which the focus is on solving murder cases. On the other hand, it is often referred to as a modern western series , because it has similarities to the classic westerns - especially with regard to the main character and the dramaturgy of the series. The broadcaster describes Longmire as a “crime thriller”.

The broadcaster A&E ended the series in 2014 after the third season, but it was then taken over by Netflix . The online provider made all ten episodes of the fourth season available online on September 10, 2015. At the end of October 2015, Netflix extended the format by a fifth season, which became available online in September 2016. In November 2016, the extension for a sixth and final season followed, which was made available online on November 17, 2017.

He emphasized how strongly the series is differentiated from many contemporary investigative series, in which “Profilers and agent masterminds fire their findings at the audience every second [...]”. Like other critics, he found the main character particularly likeable. The main actors and the landscape shots were also praised by various reviewers. Sidney Schering from the Internet magazine Quotenmeter.de however, complained that "the very casual to be solved murder cases in the first episodes [...]" were.
