Wishing (Will Make It So) is a song from the soundtrack of the film Restless Love ( Love Affair ) from 1939. The song was composed and written by Buddy DeSylva . It is sung in the film both by Vera Lynn (accompanied by the Ambrose Orchestra ) and by children, who are guided by the film's paralyzed protagonist, played by Irene Dunne . The lyrics of the song, which implores that everything can come true if you only believe in it firmly enough (“Wishing will make it so […] Dreamers tell us dreams come true”). “Wishes come true […] dreamers tell us that dreams come true ”), also relates to the character's situation. The piece was soon accepted into their repertoire by most of the major US entertainment orchestras, as was the case with almost all popular film songs at the time.

1940 was Wishing (Will Make It So) in the category "Best Song" for a Oscar nomination. However, the award went to Harold Arlen for his song Over the Rainbow from the musical film The Wizard of Oz ( The Wizard of Oz ).

Cover versions

Glenn Miller and his orchestra recorded the song that same year. Frank Sinatra , who had recently been hired by band leader Harry James as the lead singer for his big band, sang the song at his first concert appearance on June 30, 1939 at the Hippodrome Theater in Baltimore .

In 1963 Buddy Holly was with Wishing for eleven weeks in the British single charts and "RYM 45 of 1963".

In the 100 Top Songs of 1939 , Wishing (Will Make It So) is sixth with 172 points (out of a possible 200).
