American VI: Ain't No Grave -

American VI: Ain't No Grave is the sixth and final music album in the American Recordings series by country singer Johnny Cash . The studio album , produced by Rick Rubin , was released posthumously on February 23, 2010 on American Recordings . The cover shows Cash as a small child.

Recordings

The recordings for the album were made in the same session as the previous album American V: A Hundred Highways . All songs were recorded between the death of his wife June in May until Cash's death in September 2003 when he was seriously ill, almost blind and in a wheelchair.

The songs are about pain, impermanence and redemption; Again, there are mostly cover versions, including songs by his friends Sheryl Crow and Kris Kristofferson and other country stars like Hank Snow and Porter Wagoner . The album is complemented by Cash's previously unpublished original composition I Corinthians 15:55 .

reception

Daniel Straub from laut.de writes:

"The urgency and authenticity that he puts into the songs with his voice remain unique and show once again why the man is rightly recognized as one of the greatest singers in the history of pop."

-

Sophie Bischoff from motor.de says:

“Not least affected by his weakened physical condition, Cash's voice on the current album has lost strength, but not violence. The musician does not lose his breathtaking presence even in the face of his own death. The interpretation of the selected songs is not characterized by fear or sadness, but the joy at the end, at the end and in transience. "

Oliver Ding from plattentests.de analyzes that the musicians employed never push themselves forward, but rather “donate artful frugality” . Cash's confidence grows beyond the suffering he has experienced, his voice is of "brittle fervor" . The focus is on the singer like the solid oak. Scarred by storms and marked by lightning strikes, but wind and weather could not harm it.
