2. Handball Bundesliga women (II)
↓ Upper Leagues (IV)

The 3rd league was introduced in the course of the league structure reform of the German Handball Federation (DHB) for the 2010/11 season. It replaces the previous five regional leagues in German handball , which were organized by the respective regional associations.

After the last meeting of the extended board of the DHB, the 3rd league is managed by the DHB by changing the game rules.

mode

Usually 56 teams take part in the 3rd division. The allocation to the four squadrons (north, east, south and west), each with 14 teams, is based on a purely geographical point of view, not, as was previously the case, according to regional association membership. The division will be repeated annually in the future, so individual clubs may change between the relays.

Four teams are relegated from the 2nd Bundesliga to the 3rd division. The four season winners are promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga. If a team renounces promotion, the runners-up play the free promotion places. The last three placed in each season are relegated to the respective major leagues . The following state associations each receive a (joint) promotion place in the 3rd division:

  • Hamburg / Schleswig-Holstein (Master of the OL Hamburg / Schleswig-Holstein)
  • Berlin / Brandenburg / Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (Master of the Orienteering Baltic Sea / Spree )
  • Saxony / Thuringia / Saxony-Anhalt (Master of the OL Central Germany)
  • Bremen / Western Lower Saxony (North Sea Champion)
  • Eastern Lower Saxony (Champion of the OL Lower Saxony)
  • Westphalia (champion of OL Westphalia)
  • Niederrhein / Mittelrhein (winner of the relegation between the masters of the OL Niederrhein and OL Mittelrhein)
  • Rhineland / Rheinhessen / Pfalz / Saar (Master of the OL Rhineland-Palatinate / Saar)
  • Hessen (Master of OL Hessen)
  • Baden / Südbaden (master and runner-up of the OL Baden-Württemberg)
  • Württemberg (champion and runner-up of the OL Baden-Württemberg)
  • Bavaria (Champion of OL Bavaria)

In the first two seasons 2010/11 and 2011/12 there may be separate promotion and relegation regulations.

Qualification for the 2010/11 season

2nd Bundesliga (5 teams)

The last two teams of each season of the 2nd Bundesliga (north and south) and the loser in the relegation of the two third-bottom are relegated to the new 3rd division.

The five regional league champions advance directly to the 2nd Bundesliga. The teams that finish the 2009/2010 season in positions 2 to 9 are qualified. The last five teams (places 10 and below) of each season are relegated to the major leagues (a total of 25 relegated teams).
