Katja Mira Herbers (born October 19, 1980 in Amsterdam , Noord-Holland ) is a Dutch actress .

life and career

Katja Herbers was born as the daughter of oboist and conductor Werner Herbers and violinist Vera Beths in the Dutch capital, Amsterdam. She grew up in the United States, among other places, where she accompanied her mother on her tour with the group L'Archibudelli . Both of her parents remarried, her mother the cellist Anner Bylsma , and her father the costume designer Leonie Polak . It was also the latter who introduced Herbers to the theater. Herbers had an au pair from Canada and, while growing up, learned German and English in addition to her native Dutch .

Herbers attended Ignatius Gymnasium in Amsterdam before studying psychology at the University of Amsterdam from 1999 to 2000 . During her studies she was part of the acting group De Trap . She lived for a short time in New York City , where she was enrolled at HB Studio , before she was accepted at the Amsterdam Theater School . She visited them from 2001 to 2005.

Herbers played her first role in front of the camera in 2002 in the film Pietje Bell and the Secret of the Black Hand as Martha Bell . She also played this role in the 2003 sequel Pietje Bell 2 - The Hunt for the Tsar's Crown . As a result, Herbers was seen in a large number of Dutch television productions, for example from 2005 to 2006 as Isabelle in Lieve Lust . After graduating from the theater school, Herbers became part of Johan Simon's theater company NTGent in Ghent, Belgium . Later she also appeared at the Münchner Kammerspiele . She was often on stage for theater performances of the works of the Austrian Arthur Schnitzler , such as the novella Fräulein Else , which earned her positive reviews. In 2013 she received the Guido de Moor Award for young talents for her portrayal as Irina in Anton Chekhov's Drei Schwestern .

In 2009, Herbers appeared in the Dutch feature film De Storm . From 2012 to 2016 she played a major role as Joyce Waanders in the Dutch series Divorce . She gained greater fame especially from 2014 after she took on the role of Helen Prins in the series Manhattan , which she played until 2015. Small roles in The Americans and The Leftovers followed. In 2018, she took on one of the new leading roles as Emily Grace at the beginning of the second season of the HBO series Westworld .

Herbers lives alternately in Amsterdam, New York City and Los Angeles .
