Ai Se Eu Te Pego! ([ aj sj‿ew tʃi ˈpɛgu ], Portuguese for “If I get you!”) is a song by the Brazilian singer Michel Teló . The song was internationally successful and ranked number one in many countries.
background
Emergence
The origins of the song go back to an event in 2006 by Sharon Acioly, who had been a singer and entertainer in the Axé Moi leisure resort in Porto Seguro for many years . She brought several students to an event stage, who sang together there, and the chorus of the song was created, which she continued to use in the years to come. Acioly had already had a national hit with Dança do Quadrado and in 2008 did the animation number Ai Se Eu Te Pego! together with Antônio Dyggs to a real song. Dyggs' band, Meninos de Seu Zeh , made the first recording of it. Other versions of Garota Safada and Cangaia de Jegue made the song a regional hit in northeast Brazil.
Europe-wide success
The singer Michel Teló heard the song performing in the region and recorded it in 2011 for his second album Michel na Balada . Teló had a few hits before and also made Ai Se Eu Te Pego! to a number one radio hit in Brazil. About football and players who imitated the dance moves to the song after scoring a goal on the pitch, the piece also became known in Europe and gradually, starting from Spain, became a number one success in many European countries (Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Netherlands, Austria, Sweden, Switzerland, Slovakia).
Copyright issue
After the song's success, three students who had been involved in its original creation reached out to Sharon Acioly to file copyright claims. Acioly agreed with the three to participate as co-authors. The original singing of the students apparently originated on a bus trip to Disneyland in the USA and there is a video of the bus trip. Three other participants on the tour filed a lawsuit in court for a share in the royalties due to Acioly and Dyggs. Pending clarification, the income for the authors was frozen by the court. Michel Teló is not affected by this question about the origin of his hit, since he is only entitled to the income as an interpreter.
Versions
In addition to the original versions from the Nordeste region of Brazil, for example by Meninos de Seu Zeh , Garota Safada , Cangaia de Jegue and Alexandre Peixe, there are several versions by Michel Teló. In addition to its original recording, it also released an English version entitled Oh, If I Catch You! . He also recorded a remix with rapper Pitbull .
Further versions of the song were created in the course of the success, among others by Play & Win , Inna , Daniel Lopes , Nossa Nossa and Mic Rola. Hallux feat. Marcus, the Gipsy Rumba Latina Band and the Banda del Diablo put the song in the charts a week before the Teló version was released in Spain, placing it between seven and 12. Gerard Joling and Willem Barth each recorded different Dutch versions the title Dan voel je me beter and Zeg me , both of which made it into the Top 100 charts, but not in the Nederlandse Top 40 .
