I Should Be So Lucky is a pop song and the international debut single by Australian singer Kylie Minogue . It was released in Australia on December 29, 1987 (worldwide on January 2, 1988) and became a number one hit in at least seven countries including Germany , Switzerland , Australia , Hong Kong , Japan , Ireland and the UK . In other countries the song reached chart positions among the top ten, for example 4th place in Austria . In the US, the song reached number 28.

history

After Locomotion , a cover for The Loco-Motion , had already enjoyed success in Australia, Kylie Minogue took I Should Be So Lucky , written by Mike Stock of Stock Aitken Waterman when the singer was already there, in less than an hour in London . The production team had the then internationally unknown Minogue wait 40 minutes because they had forgotten their arrival and wrote the song during this time. Minogue then flew back to Australia to continue working on the Neighbors soap series .

The bubblegum- like song, which was played mainly with a drum computer and synthesizer , and partly with guitars , is held at an average tempo of 120 beats per minute.

Popmatters wrote the song, "an almost frightfully perky tale of Romantic frustration, contains practically every '80s dance music cliché: from the numerous orchestra hits to the uncomfortably thin sounding drum machine."

Music video

The music video was produced by Chris Langman and recorded in November 1987 at Channel 7 Studios in Melbourne , Australia. It shows Minogue apparently walking through her home, in other scenes she is shown against a background similar to a blackboard painted with colored chalk. The video first appeared on British and international music television in January 1988.
