history

Steven Greenberg had just landed a local radio hit when he decided to start the Lipps, Inc. project in the summer of 1979 . The album Mouth to Mouth , which also featured Funkytown, was released in the autumn of 1979 . The lyrics are intended to express that Greenberg no longer felt comfortable in Minneapolis and wished to go somewhere else, this place is the funky town sung about in the song . The result was a dance song with a "pumping rhythm" and the distinctive singing of Cynthia Johnson , which gave the declining disco movement of the 1970s another boost in popularity. The song lives from the constant repetition of the main riff , which is taken from The Doors song The Changeling from the album LA Woman , the vocals provided with reverb and numerous sound effects .

The single was released on February 18, 1980 as a second release from the album Mouth to Mouth . In the United States, as well as Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium and Norway, the disco classic became a number one hit. It remained the group's only hit, going platinum in the US for over one million units sold.
