Luncoiu de Jos (outdated Lunca de Jos ; German Langenthal , Hungarian Alsólunkoj ) is a municipality in the Hunedoara district in Transylvania , Romania .
Geographical location
The municipality of Luncoiu de Jos is located on the Luncoiu brook - a left tributary of the Crișul Alb ( White Screech ) - in western Transylvania in the Transylvanian Ore Mountains . Located on the European route 79 and the now disused railway line Deva – Brad , the place is about seven kilometers south of the small town of Brad ( Tannenhof ); the district capital Deva ( Diemrich ) is about 30 kilometers south of Luncoiu de Jos.
history
The place Sălașu de Sus was first mentioned in 1439. On the basis of archaeological finds on the area of the incorporated village of Podele , according to G. Téglás , I. Marțian and M. Roska, the history of settlement in the region can be dated back to the Bronze Age .
Today the inhabitants live mainly from cattle breeding, agriculture and wood processing.
population
In 1850 there were 1943 people living in the area that is now the municipality. 1857 of them were Romanians , one Hungarian , two Germans and 83 Roma . The highest number of inhabitants (2636) - at the same time that of the Romanians (2631) - was reached in 1966. The highest number of Hungarians (24) was recorded in 1900, that of Germans (6) in 1890 and Roma in 1850. In addition, three residents in 1890 and one in 1910 called themselves Slovaks .
In 2002 there were 2024 people in the municipality of Luncoiu de Jos, of whom 2012 were Romanians, two Hungarians, nine Roma and one other.
Attractions
- The Valea Lungă hunting reserve , about 600 hectares in size, was opened in 1933.
