Totești [ ˈtoteʃtʲ ] ( Hungarian Totesd ) is a municipality in Hunedoara County , in Transylvania , Romania .

The place is also known by the Hungarian name Tótfalu .

Geographical location

Location of Totești in Hunedoara County

The municipality of Totești is located in southwestern Transylvania to the left of the Râul Mare - a tributary of the Strei ( Strell ) - in the historic Hatzeger Land (also Wallenthal ; Rum. Țara Hațegului ). In the southern part of the Hunedoara district on the national road ( drum național ) DN 68, the village of Totești is about 7 kilometers southwest of the nearest small town Hațeg ; the district capital Deva ( Diemrich ) is located about 50 kilometers north of Totești.

history

The place Totești, a serf village in the historical chair district Hátszeg of the Hunyad county , was mentioned for the first time in 1416. However, the history of settlement in the region goes back to Roman times . Remains of a settlement were found on the area of ​​the village of Totești, called Grădiștioara by the locals . According to information from JM Ackner , C. Goos and V. Christescu, a Roman road ran on the area of ​​today's municipality .

Today the residents live mainly from agriculture and cattle breeding.

At the 1850 census, 1,354 people lived in the area of ​​today's municipality. 1214 of them were Romanians , 94 Hungarians , 43 Roma and three Germans . The highest population (2548) was reached in 1956. The highest number of Romanians (2422) was counted in 1966, that of Hungarians (140) in 1910, that of Roma (66) and that of Germans (32) in 1930. In addition, in some censuses, some residents identified themselves as Ukrainians , Serbs, and Slovaks . The highest number of Ukrainians (8) was reached in 2002. In 2002 there were people living in the municipality of Toteşti in 1993, of whom 1923 were Romanians, 47 Roma, 11 Hungarians, eight Ukrainians, two Germans, one Italian and one Serb.
