Location of Vălișoara in Hunedoara County

The municipality of Vălișoara is located on the Fornădia brook - a right tributary of the Căian - in western Transylvania in the Transylvanian Ore Mountains . Located on the European route 79 and the now disused railway line Deva – Brad , the place is about 15 kilometers south of the small town of Brad ( Tannenhof ); the district capital Deva ( Diemrich ) is located 22 kilometers south of Vălișoara.

history

The place Vălișoara was first mentioned in a document in 1499 or 1506 (according to different information).

However, settlement in the region goes back to the Early Bronze Age . On the area of the incorporated village Dealu Mare - called Ruşti by the locals - archaeological finds were made in 1998 that point to the Early Bronze Age.

The main occupations of the population are forestry, animal husbandry and mining, which has declined sharply in recent years.

The highest number of inhabitants (2630) - at the same time that of the Romanians (2623) - was reached in 1920, that of Hungarians (29) in 1900 and that of Germans (20) in 1880. In the 1930 survey, three Roma were also registered. In 2002 there were 1380 Romanians and eight Hungarians in the municipality of Vălișoara.
