Certeju de Sus (outdated Cierteș ; Hungarian Felsőcsertés ) is a municipality in the Hunedoara district in Transylvania , Romania .
The place is also known by the Hungarian names Csertés and Csertésköz .
Geographical location
The municipality of Certeju de Sus is located in the southern foothills of the Transylvanian Ore Mountains ( Munții Metaliferi ) west of the Transylvanian Basin ( Podișul Transilvaniei ). Located on the upper reaches of the Certej - a right tributary of the Mureș - and the county road ( drum județean ) DJ 761, the place is about 14 kilometers northeast of the district capital Deva ( Diemrich ). The Romanian A1 should (when finished) run about nine kilometers (as the crow flies) south of Certeju de Sus.
history
Certeju de Sus was first mentioned in a document in 1727. However, the history of settlement in the region goes back much further. In the area of the place finds of a settlement have been made, which (according to different statements) point to the Neolithic Age ( M. Roska ) or the Early Bronze Age ( H. Schroller ).
In the area of the incorporated village of Săcărâmb (Groß-Astdorf) , a gold mine , a silver , an arsenic and an antimonium mine are noted at the beginning of the 19th century .
After the villagers of Voia of the Balşa municipality opposed the construction of the processing plant of the gold mining company Deva Gold (2008), the mayor and the villagers of Certeju de Sus approved the construction of the processing plant.
There are several silver and gold mines in the municipality. The Canadian company Eldorado Gold, which owns 80% of the shares in Deva Gold (as of 2012), wants to invest 270 million US dollars in Certej and, starting in 2015, will produce an average of four tons of gold and 20.5 tons of silver per year. After the investor demanded that 56 hectares of forest should be cleared, environmentalists managed to stop the project in 2019.
In 1971, 89 people died when the Certej dam broke .
