Lăpugiu de Jos (outdated Lăpugiul Inferior ; German  Unter-Lappendorf , Hungarian Alsólapugy ) is a municipality in the Hunedoara district in Transylvania , Romania .

The place is also known by the Romanian outdated names Lăpughiul de Jos and Lăpușul-Inferior .

Geographical location

Lăpugiu de Jos is a municipality in southwest Transylvania in the northern foothills of the Poiana-Ruscă Mountains - a mountain range of the Romanian Western Carpathians - on the Valea Lăpugilor stream in the historic Marosillye district of Hunyad County ( Eisenmarkt County ). In the west of the district of Hunedoara, two kilometers south of the European route 673 and the Ilia-Lugoj railway line on the county road ( drum județean ) DJ 680B, the place Lăpugiu de Jos is about 30 kilometers east of the small town of Făget ( Kr. Timiș ); the district capital Deva ( Diemrich ) is located about 42 kilometers east of Lăpugiu de Jos.

The incorporated villages and hamlets are between three ( Ohaba ) and eight kilometers ( Baştea ) from the community center. The Romanian A1 motorway should (when finished) also run on the area of ​​the municipality.

history

Lăpugiu de Jos was first mentioned in a document in 1439 and was a Romanian serf village in the Middle Ages . However, the history of settlement in the region goes back much further. Finds which, according to G. Téglás u. a. point to the Hallstatt period ; at Lăsau an earth castle that has not yet been dated.

Since the official survey of 1850, predominantly Romanians have been registered in the area of ​​today's municipality . The highest population (4433) - and at the same time that of the Romanians (4328) and the Magyars (62) - was determined in 1910. The highest population of Roma (41) was registered in 1930 and that of Romanian Germans (20) was registered in 1880. In 2002, the Lăpugiu de Jos municipality counted 1,750 people. A Ukrainian was also registered in 2002 . At the October 31, 2011 census, there were 1624 people in 725 households in the municipality. The incorporated village of Baştea is almost deserted today,

The main occupation of the population is forestry.

Attractions

  • The wooden church Adormirea Maicii Domnului in Lăpugiu de Jos, built in 1765, in which wall paintings depicting Cloşcas - one of the three leaders of the peasant uprising of 1784 in Transylvania - can be seen, is a listed building.
