Cerbăl [ ˈtʃerbɘl ] (outdated Cerbel ; Hungarian Cserbel ) is a municipality in the Hunedoara district in Transylvania , Romania .

Location of Cerbăl in Hunedoara County

Located in the southwestern part of the historical region of Transylvania , the municipality with its eight incorporated villages extends on the back of the Poiana-Ruscă Mountains . The municipality in the west of the Hunedoara district covers an area of ​​12,863 hectares (4,812 hectares of which are farmed). On a mountain road - a continuation of the county road ( drum județean ) DJ 687J - the place is about 20 kilometers east of the next larger city Hunedoara ; the district capital Deva ( Diemrich ) is around 38 kilometers (19 km as the crow flies) to the northeast.

The place Cerbăl was first mentioned in 1476. Five kilometers east of Cerbăl, archaeologists discovered various pieces of jewelery in 1874, which are in museums in Budapest and Deva. According to reports by C. Gooss (1877), F. Romer (1886), G. Téglás (1887) and others. a. these indicate the La Tène period .

Due to the remote location, forms of the original social life and traces of traditional culture - such as various handicrafts, traditional costumes and the regionally typical architecture - have been preserved to this day. These differ significantly from other parts of the country.

In 1850 there were 1602 inhabitants in the area of ​​today's municipality; In 1580 there were Romanians , three Hungarians and 19 Roma . In 1880 the largest population was determined with 2104 - also that of the Romanians (2085) - and since then it has steadily decreased. In 2002 there were still 665 people living on the territory of the municipality, 661 of them Romanians, two Hungarians, one from Rome and one from Slovakia . The highest number of Hungarians (24) was registered in 1910, that of Germans in 1900 (2) and that of Roma in 1850. In addition, ten residents identify themselves as Ukrainians in 1910, one in 1910 and two in 1930 as Serbs , three in 1930 and one in 2002 as Slovaks.

The population lives mainly from agriculture and animal husbandry. Because of the steep terrain, agriculture is practiced in terraced fields.

Attractions

  • The wooden church of the incorporated village Poienița Tomii , built in 1802, is located about 4 kilometers northwest of Cerbăl.
  • Numerous hiking trails especially attract tourists from Romania to Cerbăl and its beautiful landscape. However, since the beginning of the 2000s, the region has been receiving more and more visitors from nearby countries as well as adventure tourists from Western Europe.
