General Berthelot (outdated Unirea ; German Unter-Wolfsdorf , Hungarian Alsófarkadin ) is a municipality in the Hunedoara district in Transylvania , Romania .
The place is also known under the Romanian name Fărcădinul de Jos and the Hungarian Patakfarkadin .
Geographical location
The municipality of General Berthelot is located in the Hatzeger Land ( Țara Hațegului ), north of the Retezat Mountains . In the southern half of the Hunedoara district, on the Galbena - a tributary of the Râul Mare - and the district road ( drum județean ) DJ 687C, the place is about 4 kilometers west of the small town of Hațeg ( Hatzeg ); the district capital Deva ( Diemrich ) is about 46 kilometers north of General Berthelot.
history
The place known today as General Berthelot was first mentioned in 1369. Earlier names of the place were Farkadin , Alsofarkadyn , Ferkedynugyinzsosz , Also-Farkadin ( Roman . Fărcădinul de Jos ) u. a .; the place was called 1854-1922 Romanian Fărcădinul de Jos . On July 4, 1922, the town was named in honor of the French General Henri Mathias Berthelot in General Berthelot renamed. In 1965 it was given the name Unirea (= "Union"). In 2001, the 70th year of the General's death, Unirea was renamed General Berthelot again after a referendum by the community.
population
At the 1850 census, 1,348 people lived in the area of today's municipality. 1238 of them were Romanians , 68 Hungarians , three Germans and 39 others (including 22 Roma ). The highest population (1752) - at the same time that of Hungarians (139) - was reached in 1910. The highest number of Romanians (1592) was counted in 1930, that of Germans (19) in 1890 and that of Roma (46) in 1930. In addition, two residents referred to themselves as Slovaks in 1880, in 1890, in 1992 and in 2002 one each . In 2002 the General Berthelot community counted 1,020 people, of which 998 were Romanians, three Hungarians, 18 Roma and one Slovak.
Attractions
- The Nopcsa villa was the residence of the small noble family of the same name. Following a tradition which should here bailiff fatia Neagra lived. The villa and 60 hectares of land were given to General Berthelot in 1922 (at the same time as he was awarded the Order of Honorary Citizen of Romania ).
