Tomeşti [ ˈtomeʃtʲ ] ( German Thomsdorf , Hungarian Tomesd ) is a municipality in the district of Hunedoara , in Transylvania , Romania .
The place is also known by the Hungarian names Felsőtamásd and Tamásfalva .
Geographical location
The municipality of Tomeşti is located in western Transylvania in the southwestern foothills of the Bihor Mountains in the historic Motzenland. In the north of the Hunedoara district on the Obârşia brook, a right tributary of the Crişul Alb ( White Screech ), and the county road ( drum județean ) DJ 763A, the place Tomeşti is about 22 kilometers northwest of the next larger town Brad ( Tannenhof ); the district capital Deva ( Diemrich ) is about 60 kilometers southeast of Tomeşti.
history
A documentary mention of the place Tomeşti or one of the villages of the municipality is not known apart from the documentary information with the construction of the churches in the places of the municipality.
However, the history of settlement in the region goes back to the Middle Ages. The remains of a medieval castle were found on the banks of the Crișul Alb in the municipality's area.
population
Since the official survey of 1850, the highest number of inhabitants (2644) and also that of the Romanians in 1941 has been determined in the area of today's municipality of Tomeşti . The highest population of the Magyars (18) was registered in 1880, that of the Roma (16) in 1930 and that of the Romanian Germans (3) in 1910. In 2002 there were 1298 people living in the community, one of whom claimed to be German, the rest as Romanians.
In 2012, three people lived in the remote town of Valea Mare de Criș . In the same year the community had three primary schools and one kindergarten with a total of 40 children.
Attractions
- The churches of Sf. Nicolae in Dobroț , Schimbarea la Față in Obârşa and the Sf. Arhangheli in Leauț village , all built in the 19th century, are listed buildings.
