Lunca Cernii de Jos (outdated Lunca Cernei de Jos ; German Birkendorf , Hungarian Alsónyiresfalva ) is a municipality in the Hunedoara district in the Transylvania region in Romania .
The place is also known under the Hungarian name Nyiresfalva .
Geographical location
The municipality of Lunca Cernii de Jos is located in the Poiana-Ruscă Mountains , in the south-west of Transylvania. Located on the upper reaches of the Cerna - a left tributary of the Mureș (Mieresch) - and the district road (Drum județean) DJ 687D, the place is 46 kilometers southwest of the city of Hunedoara (Eisenmarkt) ; the district capital Deva (Diemrich) is located 70 kilometers northeast of Lunca Cernii de Jos.
The incorporated villages and hamlets are about three to nine kilometers from the community center, on partly unpaved roads. Meria (Hungarian: Kékesfalva ), according to tradition, formerly a robbers' nest then a Romanian serf village of the aristocratic Mujina family , is located at the most remote and difficult to access on a 962 m high mountain plateau.
About two thirds of the community area is forested.

The place Lunca Cernii de Jos was first mentioned in 1360. The unincorporated village Negoiu (Hungarian Nyegojlunka ) was until 1950 part of the community Răchitova ( Weidensdorf ).
The main occupation of the population is forestry and livestock.
population
In 1850 there were 1620 people living in the area of today's municipality. 1611 of them were Romanians and nine were Roma . The highest number of inhabitants (4334) - exclusively Romanians - was reached in 1956. The highest number of Hungarians (135) and that of Germans (51) was recorded in 1900, that of Roma (17) was determined in 1930. In addition, in 1890 one and in 1900 22 inhabitants referred to themselves as Slovaks . Most of the Romanian Germans on the territory of the municipality were registered in Lunca Cernii de Sus (Hungarian Felsőnyiresfalva ) in 1900 (45). From 1966 the number of the population decreased drastically, so that in 2002 only 1116 people (exclusively Romanians) were registered in the municipality.
At the 2011 census, 905 people were counted in 409 households in the parish.
Attractions
- The two hectare Cheile Cernei nature reserve is located along the Cerna stream in the area of the town of Lunca Cernii de Jos.
