Romos ( German  Rumes , Hungarian Romosz ) is a municipality in the Hunedoara district in Transylvania , Romania .

The place is also known by the German names Rumessdorf , Romos and Rams and the Hungarian Szászromosz .

Geographical location

Location of Romos in the Hunedoara district

The municipality of Romos is located in the south of the Transylvanian Basin north of the Șureanu Mountains ( Mühlbach Mountains ) in the so-called Unterwald of the Altland in the historic Brooser Stuhl . At Bach Romoş - a left tributary of the Mureş ( Mieresch ) - and the county road ( drum județean ) DJ 705G, about five kilometers south of the European route 68 , the place is about 12 kilometers east of the small town of Orăştie ( Broos ); the district capital Deva ( Diemrich ) is 39 kilometers west of Romos.

history

The place Romos was probably founded in the 12th century by the Transylvanian Saxons and first mentioned in 1206 under the name Rams , together with the two places at Alba Iulia Crapundorph and Karako (today Ighiu and Cricău ). It is very likely that the three places had something to do with the salt trade on the Mureș. The fact that the place was founded by Transylvanian Saxons is confirmed by the fact, documented in 1206, that the primi hospites regni , the first western invites of the Hungarian kingdom under Andrew II, were settlers who were called Saxones .

According to reports by JM Ackner (1856), N. Densușianu, G. Téglás u. a. archaeological finds were made on the area of the site, which were assigned to the Bronze Age . Among the finds were a "golden plow" and other golden objects in the form of agricultural implements. A “bronze carriage” is in Vienna today . Furthermore, finds were made which were assigned to the Roman era .

The place is also known by the "Rumeser Student" - a student of the Brooser Gymnasium - who was captured by the Turks after the conquest of Mühlbach (at the beginning of the Turkish wars ). He wrote a description of Turkish customs and traditions. It is the first known book by a Transylvanian author.

Today the residents live mainly from cattle breeding (mainly cattle and sheep) and agriculture.

population

During the "transmigration" between 1734 and 1776 about 550 Landler from Upper Austria , Carinthia and Styria were settled in Rumes. That was one of the highest numbers of settled peasants in Transylvania.

At the census of 1850, 5187 people lived in the area of today's municipality. 4653 of them were Romanians , four Hungarians , 291 Germans and 239 Roma . The highest population (5251) - and at the same time that of the Romanians (4896) and that of the Hungarians (19) - was reached in 1910. The highest number of Germans and Roma were counted in 1850. Furthermore, in 1910 19 and 2002 two identified themselves as Ukrainians , in 1910, 1930 and 1992 one each as a Serb and in 1956 one as a Slovak . In 2002 there were 2,855 people in the Romos community, 2,734 of whom were Romanians, eight Hungarians, 26 Germans, 80 Roma, two Ukrainians and five others.

After the revolution of 1989 about half of the Romanian Germans emigrated from Romos; In 2010 there were still 20 Romanian Germans living here.
