Sălașu de Sus [ ˈsɘlaʃu de sus ] (outdated Sălașul Superior ; German  Ober-Bachdorf , Hungarian Felsőszálláspatak ) is a municipality in the Hunedoara district in Transylvania , Romania .

Sălașu de Sus is also known under the German name Ober-Dorfsbach and the Hungarian Szálláspataka .

The municipality of Sălaşu de Sus is located in southwestern Transylvania in the Hatzeger Land ( Țara Hațegului ), north of the Retezat Mountains . Located on Sălaş - a left tributary of the Strei - and the county road ( drum județean ) DJ 667A, the place is about 13 kilometers south of the small town of Hațeg ( Hatzeg ); the district capital Deva ( Diemrich ) is located about 70 kilometers north of Sălașu de Sus. The ten incorporated villages, hamlets and individual settlements are 3-7 kilometers from Sălașu de Sus. Two thirds of the community area is used for agriculture.

The municipality's train station is located in the incorporated village of Ohaba de sub Piatră ( Stone Village ) on the Simeria – Petroșani railway line , about 6 kilometers from Sălașu de Sus. In addition, Ohaba de sub Piatră is on European route 79 .

history

The place Sălașu de Sus was first mentioned in 1360. On the basis of archaeological finds on the area of ​​the incorporated village of Râu Alb ( Weißwasser ), according to G. Téglás, the history of settlement in the region can be dated back to the Neolithic Age . Furthermore, finds were made on the area of ​​the village of Sălașu de Sus, which, according to G. Téglás , I. Andrieşecu , I. Martian and M. Roska, indicate a settlement in the Early Bronze Age . A clay vessel with several Dacian coins - mimicking those of the Macedonian king Philip II - was found in Sălașu de Sus in 1935. Most of the coins are now in the Deva Museum.

In the Middle Ages there lived a reformed community of petty aristocrats - the Nemeș ("owners of land without titles of nobility") - and Romanian subordinate farmers.

Today the inhabitants live mainly from cattle breeding, agriculture and wood processing.

In 1850, 4557 people lived in the area that is now the municipality. 3394 of them were Romanians , 1043 Hungarians , one German , 107 Roma and 12 others. The highest population (5552) - at the same time that of the Romanians (5091) and the Germans (81) - was reached in 1900. The highest number of Hungarians and Roma was recorded in 1850. In addition, one resident in 1880 and 127 residents in 1900 described themselves as Ukrainians , one resident in 1890 as Serb and in 1900 29 residents as Slovaks .

In 2002 there were 2782 people in the municipality of Sălașu de Sus, of which 2764 were Romanians, eight Hungarians and ten Roma.

  • The ruins of the Knjasen Cândreș estate , built in the 15th century and rebuilt in the 17th, are listed as historical monuments. The property - house, chapel, curtain wall and the four corner towers - was set on fire in the uprising of Francis II Rákóczi .
