Hărău [ ˈhɘrɘu ] (outdated Harou ; German  Haren , Hungarian Haró or Harró ) is a municipality in the Hunedoara district in Transylvania , Romania .

Geographical location

The municipality of Hărău is located in southwestern Transylvania, west of the Transylvanian Basin ( Podișul Transilvaniei ). Located in the Mureș Valley and on the county road ( drum județean ) DJ 107A, the place is about ten kilometers northwest of the small town of Simeria ; the district capital Deva ( Diemrich ) is located about 15 kilometers southwest of Hărău. About half of the roads connecting the towns in the municipality are asphalted. On the area of ​​the incorporated village of Chimindia , occurrences of carbonated mineral springs ( ) and in Banpotoc ( Bonbach ) in the Vărmagaer valley (Vărmaga, a right tributary of the Mureș) travertine and marble are to be mentioned.

history

The place Hărău was first mentioned in 1360. However, the history of settlement in the region goes back much further. On the area of ​​the place - called Cetate (Földvár) by the locals - according to information from G. Téglás , I. Marţian and M. Roska, finds that point to the Early Bronze Age were made. These are currently in the museum in Deva.

Constantin Brâncuși used marble from the quarries in Banpotoc for many of his sculptures.

The main occupations of the population are wood processing, agriculture, bottling mineral water and working in the quarry.

population

In 1850, 2263 people lived in the area that is today the municipality. 1844 of them were Romanians , 344 Magyars , 74 were Roma and eleven without information. The highest number of inhabitants (2951) was reached in 1910. The highest number of Romanians (2511) was recorded in 1956, that of Magyars (400) in 1880, that of Roma in 1850 and that of Germans (26) in 1880. In addition, in 1880 one resident referred to himself as a Slovak and a Serbian, and in 1956 one as a Ukrainian . At the 2011 census, there were 2231 people in 905 households in the municipality.

Attractions

  • The church of Sf. Dumitru in Hărău, built around 1700, is a listed building.
  • The church of Sf. Nicolae in Bârsău (ung. Berekszó ), built in the 16th century and the tower renovated in the 19th century, is a listed building.
