The 1996/97 season was the 15th edition of the highest English women's ice hockey league , the Women's Premier Ice Hockey League . The league is run by the English Ice Hockey Association , the English association under the umbrella of the British ice hockey association Ice Hockey UK . The winner received the Chairman's Cup . The Scorpions from Sunderland were able to defend their title.

Relegation
The last placed in the Premier League had to play in two games against the winner of the Division I final in the fight for a place in the top division. The Solihull Vixens won the overall comparison and took the place of the Chelmsford Cobras. The exact results are not known.

The Women's National Ice Hockey League is the second tier of the English women 's ice hockey league after the Premier League. Division 1 is the highest class in it. It is divided into two regional groups.
