The 1997/98 season was the 16th edition of the highest English women's ice hockey league , the Women's Premier Ice Hockey League . The league is run by the English Ice Hockey Association , the English association under the umbrella of the British ice hockey association Ice Hockey UK . The winner received the Chairman's Cup . The Sunderland Scorpions won the title for the third time in a row.

Initially, all teams played a simple round with a return leg. The four best reached the semifinals. The games lasted 3 × 15: 00 minutes. There were two points for a win and one point for a draw.

Division 1
The Women's National Ice Hockey League is the second tier of the English women 's ice hockey league after the Premier League. Division 1 is the highest class in it. It is divided into two regional groups.

Relegation
A representative of Division I competed against the last of the WPIHL to achieve promotion. In addition, there were fights between the winners of the two groups of Division I for participation in the relegation games.

The Basingstoke Ladies had thus retaliated for the defeat in the league final and at the same time achieved promotion to the highest British women's league.
