Initially, all teams played a simple round with a return leg. The four best reached the semifinals. In this final round only one game was played between the opponents.
The four best-placed teams took part in the final tournament. The first played against the fourth and the second against the third. The winners carried out the final.
From the top five in the league of the previous year , a new, higher league Elite League was formed. The Premier League was filled with teams from the third division, Division I.

After a main round with home and away games in the everyone-versus-everyone mode, playoffs were played in a KO mode in a final four tournament among the best four teams.

Locations of the clubs of Division I for the 2016/17 season
The Division I (the Women's National Ice Hockey League ) since the season 2015/16 after the Elite League and the Premier League, the third stage of the English and British women's hockey league. After the creation of the Elite League from participants of the Premier League, the latter was filled with previous participants in Division I, which was greatly reduced. It is divided into a north and a south group.
