History of origin

City halls

The Innsbruck city halls at the end of the 19th century

The House of Music was built on the site of the former city halls. They were opened in their earliest form in 1773 as a public entertainment venue, which became popular primarily through the carnival balls . In 1863 the “Redoutensäle” were upgraded with paintings. Due to dilapidation, the city had the halls demolished in 1885. In 1890 the new building was inaugurated, which was used a lot and was rebuilt again in 1927. During the Second World War , the city halls were badly damaged in bombings in 1943 and 1944. In 1947 a cabaret was set up in the basement, but the reconstruction was delayed for many years due to the lack of building materials after the war.

It was not until 1960 that the complete reconstruction could be announced; the building now included a theater, a café and a multipurpose room. In the following years, the city halls formed an important cultural venue and were also a permanent location for the chamber plays of the Tyrolean State Theater and as a rehearsal location for the Tyrolean Symphony Orchestra . With the opening of the new congress house in 1973, the city halls slowly lost their importance as an event location and outdated technology and space problems led to the fact that a new building was considered. The halls were finally demolished in autumn 2015.

The new building should now offer significantly more space and, as the House of Music, bring together various musical institutions scattered throughout the city. The project by the architect Erich Strolz was selected after an international architecture competition. The foundation stone was laid on November 20, 2015 with the property developer Innsbrucker Immobilien Gesellschaft under the direction of Georg Preyer. During the construction work, the Kammerspiele of the State Theater was relocated to the Innsbruck Trade Fair , while the symphony orchestra used the Canisianum for rehearsals. The costs, which are distributed between the city of Innsbruck, the state of Tyrol and the federal government, were initially set at EUR 58 million.

In addition to modern event rooms, the Haus der Musik also includes a large number of classrooms and an extensive library. This enabled the Institute for Musicology at the University of Innsbruck , the Innsbruck location of the Mozarteum and parts of the Conservatory to be merged; the holdings of these institutions also filled the library. Other users are the Festival of Early Music , the Tyrolean Singing Association, the Tyrolean Folk Music Association and the Tyrolean Brass Music Association. There is also a gastronomic offer. The new house opened on October 6, 2018, at which point the total costs amounted to EUR 62.7 million.

management

The management of the House of Music is the responsibility of the event holding Tiroler Landestheater und Orchester GmbH Innsbruck , founded in 2005 and supported by the State of Tyrol and the City of Innsbruck. The cultural manager and orchestra conductor Wolfgang Laubichler was appointed director of the house .
