Between the Bars is a song by the American singer-songwriter Elliott Smith . It appeared on Either / Or , Smith's third album, in 1997 , and was part of the soundtrack for the drama Good Will Hunting . For this film, Smith also recorded an orchestral version of Between the Bars with composer Danny Elfman . With a running time of 1 min 09 s, this is about half as long as the original version. Furthermore, Between the Bars was used in the soundtrack of the tragic comedy Love Stories from 2012 and the content was taken up in 2015 in the episode 2x07 of the animated series Rick and Morty .

The quiet Between the Bars can be classified as an unusual love song. Apparently it is about a romantic relationship with a person “between the bars”, ie “between the bars”, “behind bars”. However, the majority of the song is understood as a story about a drinker who is trapped “between the bars” and regrets his botched life. The alcohol serves the protagonist to cope with the disappointment in himself. This interpretation is supported by the fact that Elliott Smith suffered from chronic depression and was alcoholic.

After Smith's unexpected death in 2003, a large number of cover versions were made : The American jazz singer Madeleine Peyroux recorded the song for her album Careless Love, which was released in 2004 . Between the Bars was also starred by Canadian rock band Metric , American singer-songwriter Chris Garneau , Danish pop singer Agnes Obel , country folk duo The Civil Wars , Texas singer Sharleen Spiteri and Australian singer and guitarist Scott Matthew covered.

In an interview, the artist Madonna said that Between the Bars was a song that she would have liked to write herself. The internet music magazine Plattentests.de described Between the Bars as one of the "greatest songs of all time".
