history

The university building in Larnaka

The Cyprus Academy of Arts was founded in 1969 by the Cypriot painter Stass Paraskos, making it the oldest educational institution in the field of the arts in Cyprus. The academy was originally located in the city of Famagusta , but after the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974 it was forced to relocate to the city of Paphos . It stayed there until 1985, when the Cypriot Minister of Education and Culture assured the use of a former school building in the village of Lempa, four kilometers north of Paphos.

The first program offered by the Academy was the Cyprus Summer School, now known as the Cyprus Summer Studio, a vacation course. This gave British and other European art students the opportunity to study art in Cyprus for a while. At the beginning of 1978 the Academy introduced the Graduate Program in Fine Arts, now known as MA Fine Arts.

In 2002 the Academy obtained additional land in Limassol City and used it as an opportunity to introduce some new visual arts programs. These include the basic study of fine arts, adult education and studies in painting, sculpture, photography and artistic printing processes. In 2007 the former university campus in Limassol was closed and since then classes have taken place in a building in the old town of Larnaka, near the St. Lazarus Church. In 2010 the academy founded the Cornaro Institute, named after the last Venetian Queen of Cyprus, Caterina Cornaro . According to the plan, the Cornaro Institute will take over the college in Larnaka in 2011.
