Cynthia Johnson (born April 22, 1956 in Saint Paul , Minnesota ) is an American singer , songwriter, producer and actress , who became known with the worldwide disco hit Funkytown .

Musical career

Before Cynthia Johnson appeared as the lead singer for Lipps, Inc. , she won the title 'Miss Black Minnesota' in 1976 and achieved local fame as the lead singer of the popular Minneapolis band 'Flyte Tyme'. Shortly after she parted ways with Flyte Tyme (who shortly thereafter transformed into the band The Time by US artist Prince ), she topped the charts in 28 countries worldwide (including the USA, Germany, Holland, Australia, Canada ) with the song Funkytown , France), more than any other song before. To date, the song has been sold more than 35 million times. By 1983 she recorded a total of three albums under the name Lipps, Inc.

In the following years she worked with artists such as Aretha Franklin , Maceo Parker and Tina Turner , appeared on numerous Motown albums, worked with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis (multi-Grammy winning songwriter and producer team), and remained a member of the gospel choir 'Sounds of Blackness' (three-time Grammy winner), of which she was a member since 1974.

In 2013 she released her first album "All That I Am" under her own name (under the independent record label Megabien Music, which is owned by Megabien Entertainment).
