Inner Circle is a reggae band from Jamaica . Although already active in the 1970s, real success only came in the 1990s with the top 10 hits Bad Boys (theme song of the TV series COPS ) and Sweat (A La La La La Long) .

history

First phase (1968–1983)

Inner Circle was founded in 1968 in Jamaica by the brothers Ian and Roger Lewis, also known as "The Fatman Riddim Section". In the beginning they mainly covered soul and R&B hits from the USA , as well as some reggae songs, mainly by Bob Marley .

The band recorded their first albums under the Trojan Records label in 1974. The first success came from 1976 when Jacob Miller became a member of the group. Miller was already known as a singer at this point and was also a well-known representative of the Rastafarian movement. With him you could reach a US deal with Capitol Records , where the two successful albums Reggae Thing (1976) and Ready for the World (1977) were released. The band also recorded a track with the disco band KC & the Sunshine Band .

They performed with Miller at the One Love Peace Concert at Kingston National Stadium in Kingston , along with Bob Marley , Peter Tosh and Dennis Brown, among others . The documentary Heartland Reggae made the band known to an international audience. In 1979 she moved to Island Records , where the internationally successful album Everything Is Great was created.

The band also appears in the 1978 reggae cult film Rockers , when the protagonist "Horsemouth" is supposed to play the drums for her .

After Jacob Miller's unexpected accidental death at the age of only 27 on March 23, 1980, Inner Circle fell apart; In 1982 the album Something So Good was released .

Second phase (since 1983)

In 1986 Ian and Roger Lewis and Bernard "Touter" re-founded Harvey Inner Circle with singer Carlton Coffie and new drummer Lancelot Hall. The band made a comeback with the album Black Roses .

In 1987 Inner Circle released the original version of the song Bad Boys , which is also the soundtrack for the US series Cops . However, this was initially ignored.

They also had a great global success with the 1992 song Sweat (A La La La La Long) . In Germany alone, this was number 1 in the charts for three months. In the course of this, Bad Boys was released again as a single. The single sold 600,000 copies in the US alone in 1993 and was number 1 in the charts in several countries in Asia, Europe and South America as well as New Zealand. The band called themselves "The Bad Boys of Reggae" as an allusion to it.

In 1993 Inner Circle received a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album for its Bad Boys album . In 1994 the group was nominated again for their album Reggae Dancer , the included song Summer Jammin became the soundtrack for Eddie Murphy's film Beverly Hills Cop 3 . In 1995, Inner Circles song Bad Boys became a hit again when a hip-hop version came out in collaboration with rapper Tek for the film of the same name, Bad Boys, starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence .

Lead singer Carlton Coffie fell ill for a long time in 1995. He was replaced by the current singer Kris Bentley , former lead singer of the popular Jamaican band Skool and winner of the Caribbean Music Song Festival 1994. After his recovery, Coffie decided not to return to the band, but instead to start a solo career.

From 1997 to 2000 Inner Circle focused on touring and played in all parts of the world. On their album Big Tings , which was released in 2000, they worked a. a. with Beenie Man , Luciano , Anthony B and Mr. Vegas together. Blood a Run , a song against war, was recorded with Junior Reid .

The so far last album Blazzin 'Fire was released in 2010.

Circlehouse Studio

The Circlehouse Studio was built in 1995 in Miami, Florida. It was initially only intended for Inner Circle's own use, but is now also used by other hip-hop and reggae musicians such as P. Diddy , Pitbull , Trick Daddy , 50 Cent . Stephen and Damian Marley and Inner Circle have their own rooms in the Circlehouse Studio. In addition to Lourdes Hersh , the manager of Inner Circle, the eldest son of Ian Lewis, Abebe Lewis, runs his own label Soundbwoy Entertainment .
