Dennis Alcapone (* 6. August 1947 in Clarendon Parish , Jamaica as Dennis Smith ) is a Jamaican musician and, together with U-Roy of the pioneers of dancehall .

Life

Having grown up in Kingston , Alcapone soon attracted attention with Winston Cameron in the El Paso sound system and was one of the local greats there. At the time of El Paso's creation (1968) and the following years, Dennis Alcapone recorded for a wide variety of producers, including greats such as Coxsone Dodd , Duke Reid and Keith Hudson , who made his first hit in the RJR charts in Jamaica : Spanish Omega . Other well-known pieces are Guns Don't Argue , It Must Come , Nanny Version and Wake Up Jamaica . All of these tunes were very successful, but never followed on from the number one success Teach the Children .

In the years that followed, Alcapone worked for a wide variety of producers and produced around a hundred singles. He referred to the Treasure Isle label with his head Duke Reid as his base . In 1973 Dennis Alcapone set out on his first tour of England, where he recorded the LP King of the Track with Bunny "Striker" Lee , which is said to have been made in just an hour - fast tunes were nothing unusual in the hard and little respected dancehall business back then. In 1974 King of the Track was released by Bunny Lee on the short-lived Magnet label . Alcapone went back to England for a tour. After the end of the tour he settled in London and did not enter Jamaica from 1975 to 1979. The reason for this was the rising murder rate in Jamaica and the increasing danger in the dancehall business. In 1976 and 1977 the albums Dread Capone and Investigator Rock were released .

It wasn't until 1989 that Dennis Alcapone brought out Revive , Vintage and Foundation , which earned him veteran status. At the end of the 1990s he was flown back to Jamaica and took part in some veteran clashes. Dennis Alcapone did not get rich from his success, however: Many compilations of his songs were created without his knowledge (e.g. the album Version Galore Vol. 2 , which was released in England and which was his first LP for the Trojan label ).

The most important works by Dennis Alcapone include his debut on the Studio One label , Forever Version , the 1974 album King of the Track in England and the French Treasure Isle compilation Baba Riba Skank . The anthology Guns Don't Argue was later published by Trojan / Sancturay / Rough Trade .
