One Love Peace Concert

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The One Love Peace Concert took place on April 22, 1978 at Kingston National Stadium in Kingston .

Reggae and music greats from Jamaica performed in front of around 32,000 spectators. These included The Meditations , Althea & Donna , Dillinger , Mighty Diamonds , Culture , Dennis Brown , Leroy Smart , Inner Circle , Big Youth , Beres Hammond and Peter Tosh .

The highlight of the concert was the appearance of Bob Marley & The Wailers . At the concert, Marley reconciled the leaders of Jamaica's two dominant political parties, Michael Manley of the ruling People's National Party (PNP) and Edward Seaga of the Jamaica Labor Party (JLP). Previously, hostile armed groups from the two parties had fought each other like a civil war. Marley moved Manley and Seaga on stage to a symbolic handshake that could temporarily end the civil war-like conditions.
