Althea & Donna , also Althia & Donna , was a Jamaican reggae - duo consisting of singers Althea Rose Forrest (* 1961 in Kingston ) and Donna Marie Reid (* 1960 in Kingston).

Career

Forrest and Reid had just finished high school in Kingston, Jamaica when they were discovered by producer Joe Gibson and songwriter Errol Thompson. Thompson wrote the song Uptown Top Ranking for them , which made them # 1 on the Jamaican charts . In the BBC the well-known British got radio host John Peel , the single hands. Peel loved the song so much that he played it constantly on the BBC's daily program.

After seven weeks in the charts, Uptown Top Ranking rose to number 1 on the British charts for one week on February 4, 1978 . The song describes the sexual ventures of a non-urban man in Kingston. As musicians, drummer Sly Dunbar and bassist Robert Shakespeare were involved in the recording. The song remained the only hit of the two singers, making them a one-hit wonder . In 1982 the duo Tandem released a German cover version under the title Ein Typ wie du . In 1998 and 2002 there were cover versions of Black Box Recorder and Joni Rewind & Estelle Swaray .

Today Althea Forrest and Donna Reid live and work in New York .
