COPS is an American television show that first aired on FOX television in 1989 and continues to air today. It is considered to be one of the triggers of the reality TV boom in the USA.

In Germany, after 28 years, in 2017, beginning with the 25th season, episodes were shown for the first time in German premieres. The 24th season was broadcast on Nitro from 2018 to 2019 .

action

In the show, a camera team accompanies a motorized police patrol in their daily work. The most attractive recordings are cut together for a broadcast of around 22 minutes. An off-screen voice is dispensed with. The title song is the first episode since Bad Boys by Inner Circle .

format

The format was developed by John Langley and Malcolm Barbour of the then "Barbour-Langley Productions". The first episodes were filmed in Fort Lauderdale in 1988 and then broadcast in 1989 by a few stations that belonged to the FOX Network. On March 11th, the show aired on FOX for the first time on Saturdays at prime time . After that, the episodes were shot in other cities in the United States and, with the growing popularity abroad, sometimes in countries in Europe, Asia and South America.

In 1989, 1990, 1993 and 1994, the series' producers were each nominated for an Emmy in the Outstanding Informational Series category.

After reality TV formats became popular in the rest of the world around the turn of the millennium, numerous local adaptations of the format were made. Similar concepts were also transferred to related topics, for example the work of emergency doctors .

Fatal incident

On August 26, 2014, a sound engineer was fatally injured by an accidental shot by a police officer in a robbery in Omaha, Nebraska.

Adaptation

For the 12th episode of the 7th season of the X-Files , COPS was used as a template.

The twelfth episode of Season 2 of My Name Is Earl shows a full episode of COPS, which was filmed in Earl's hometown with people from town.
