Ogooué catchment area

The Ogooué (also written Ogoué or Ogowe ) is an approximately 1200 km long river that flows from the Republic of the Congo to Gabon .

Its catchment area covers almost all of Gabon; some tributaries extend to Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea . The 223,856 km² catchment area of the Ogooué is predominantly covered by tropical rainforest and grassland.

course

The Ogooué rises near Kengue in the northwest of the Batéké plateau in the Republic of the Congo. At Boumango he crosses the border to Gabon, where the regions of Haut-Ogooué , Ogooué-Lolo , Ogooué-Ivindo , Moyen-Ogooué and Ogooué-Maritime are named after him. At Maulongo , the Poubara Falls lie on the river. There are rapids from Lastoursville to Ndjolé , which is why the river is only navigable from Ndjolé to the sea. Via Lambaréné , the Ogooué reaches its confluence with the Gulf of Guinea south of Port-Gentil , where it forms a delta .

The tributaries of the Ogooué include Ivindo , Mpassa , Lolo , Okano and Ngounié .

Flora and fauna

About 325 known fish species live in the catchment area. Around a third of them are endemic .

Hydrology

The mean discharge of the Ogooué at Lambaréné is 4320 m³ / s.
