John Langley (film producer)

John Russell Langley, Jr. (born June 1, 1943 in Oklahoma City ) is an American screenwriter , film and television director, and film and television producer . He is considered a pioneer of American reality TV .

Life

Langley grew up in Los Angeles and completed his military service (1961-1963) to study English at California State University in Dominguez Hills , which he graduated in 1971 with a master's degree. He broke off a subsequent doctoral project that was followed for a short time in order to devote himself to film and television, where he was mainly involved in documentaries and reality TV productions.

In 1983, he and his co-producers won the CINE Golden Eagle Award in the “Social” category for the documentary The Cocaine Blues: The Myth and Reality of Cocaine , which dealt with drug addicts and for which he was also responsible for the script and direction Documentary ”.

Langley became internationally known through the television series COPS , which he designed , in which a camera team accompanies police patrols in their daily work. From 1989 until today (2011) almost 1,000 episodes have been broadcast on FOX . The series earned Langley, along with his co-producers, a total of four Emmy nominations.

Langley's production influenced numerous similar programs and caused a real boom in reality TV formats. Langley is also involved in the two series Street Patrol (an offshoot of COPS that has been broadcast since 2008 ) and Inside American Jail (a reality TV series about the daily life of prisoners arrested since 2007), which he produces with his son Morgan Langley successfully involved himself.

1995 Langley founded his own film production company (Langley Films) , which is mainly dedicated to the production of independent films .

In February 2011, Langley was honored with a star in the television category on the Hollywood Walk of Fame .
