Santa Maria is a song by the Italopop duo Oliver Onions . It reached the top of the German single charts in 1980 in both the original version and the German cover version by Roland Kaiser .

The version of Oliver Onions

The song was written and produced by Guido de Angelis, Maurizio de Angelis and Cesare de Natale . It appeared on the album of the same name. In Germany and Austria the song reached number one in the charts in August and September 1980, and number two in Switzerland.

The version by Roland Kaiser

Kaiser originally wrote a text about Christopher Columbus and the discovery of America for the German version of the song - at that time it was customary to translate international hits into German . The record company had initially produced it with Kaiser, but discarded it before it was released. As a reaction to this, Kaiser wrote together with the hit writer Norbert Hammerschmidt in one text many clichés of the German hit : from trips to southern climes to defloration ("daring the step - Santa Maria - from girl to woman"). He expected the company to reject it again, but it was enthusiastic. The title was also a huge success with the audience: a total of 1.2 million singles were sold from the piece released in June 1980. In December 1980 / January 1981, Roland Kaiser’s version also reached number one on the charts in the Netherlands and Belgium.

In 1981 Roland Kaiser also won the Bronze Lion from Radio Luxemburg with the piece .

Parodies and other cover versions

In 1980 Didi Hallervorden published a cover version of the song under the title Punker Maria . The following year, Mike Krüger also recorded a stupid version of the song under the title Sand da Maria .

Jaromír Mayer published a Czech version of Santa Maria .

criticism

Die Zeit called Roland Kaiser’s version a "travel hit" and wrote:

“Heard a thousand times, the island, which was born of dreams, has etched itself into your memory forever. Roland Kaiser praised them with awe and a tremolo of longing, as if there could be no other great goals for those who have been there once. Anyone who has such travel hits doesn't need a travel catalog . "
