Band history

The sisters Kim Appleby (born August 28, 1961 ) and Melanie Susan Appleby (born July 11, 1966January 18, 1990 ) were discovered in a London dance club. They then signed a record deal with Supreme Records in 1985 and subsequently performed under the name Mel & Kim. The record company put in contact with the trio of producers Stock Aitken Waterman , which Mel & Kim subsequently produced.

The duo had their greatest success with the first single Showing Out (Get Fresh at the Weekend) released in September 1986 . This placed third in the British charts and became number one in Germany . The next single, Respectable , reached number one in the singles hit parade in March 1987 both in Great Britain and again in Germany. In the same year, the duo's first and only album, FLM, was released

The two sisters were able to achieve further successes in 1987 and 1988, but were then surpassed by Kylie Minogue and Rick Astley , on whom Stock Aitken Waterman increasingly concentrated. The reason for this was that Mel Appleby was only able to work to a very limited extent due to cancer. She suffered from paraganglioma and died in January 1990 of pneumonia as a result of chemotherapy . Kim Appleby then started a solo career.
