The Kingston Trio in the original line-up in 1957: Dave Guard, Bob Shane and Nick Reynolds

The Kingston Trio is an American musical group. It was very popular in the late 1950s and 1960s and was instrumental in the folk revival .

Career

The trio played from 1957 in Palo Alto, California, with members Bob Shane, Nick Reynolds and Dave Guard. They were influenced by the sound of the " Weavers ". The Kingston Trio's first hit was a version of the folk song Tom Dooley , for which it received a gold record in 1959 . Seven of the band's albums received gold awards by 1964. The group's music was straightforward and harmonious. In 2004 the original member Bob Shane sang with George Grove and Bobby Haworth.

The Kingston Trio plays music from a wide variety of fields, including folk (including songs by Woody Guthrie , Pete Seeger and Bob Dylan ), country , gospel and music with Latin American influences. Quite a few of the group's songs are directly or indirectly political songs that reveal both left-wing liberal and patriotic American attitudes.
